Son Doong is the largest cave on the planet.
A beautiful Landscape cave in the world. Located deep in the jungles of Phong Nha Ke-Bang National Park, in Vietnam.
Cave:-
- 600-feet high
- 300-feet wide
- more than 2.5-miles long
History:-
Local man Ho Khanh discovered Son Doong in 1990 while searching National Park for food and timber to earn a modest income. During his search he found this cave and heard the sounds of a river raging from somewhere inside. He returned home and forgot about the cave.
Ho Khanh met Howard and Deb Limbert of the British Cave Research Association (BRCA), who were conducting exploratory caving expeditions in the area. After hearing his stories, they urged Ho Khanh to rediscover the cave, after several attempts. In 2009, he led Howard, Deb and a team of other caving professionals to the opening. After the first survey in 2009, the team were able to conclude that the cave had the largest cross-section of any cave anywhere on the planet.
The cave was named “Son Doong” and Ho Khanh is still an integral part of every Son Doong Expedition.
Fact:-1) World's largest cave.
2) You could fit an entire New York City block inside, skyscrapers and all. 3) A Boeing 747 could soar through it and not so much as dent its wings.
It’s so massive, in fact, that it has its own weather system. a rich subterranean jungle filled with rare plants, milky white insects and hanging vines. There’s even a troop of monkeys – surely, the only ones on the planet to make their home underground, rather than in the trees. Only a handful of tourists are allowed in each year, part of a five day expedition that includes two nights camping out in Son Doong itself.
How cave formed?
Hang Son Doong was formed two to five million years ago, when river water flowing across the limestone burrowed down along a fault, scouring out a giant tunnel beneath the mountains. In places where the limestone was weak, the ceiling collapsed into sinkholes, creating the gigantic skylights.
